Take an old, beat up Honda Gold Wing, strip it for all excess, and what do you get? - A slick, mean looking ride. Kevin Rowland built this Honda from a 1983 (as old as me!) Gold Wing, that had been hidden away under a tarp for more than 20 years. I think the result speaks for itself.

The meanest rolling sofa I have ever seen.

Most people can’t believe it when I tell them it’s just a 1983 Honda Gold Wing. Other than cutting a few things off, the frame is still stock, the carbs give it a bit of a different punch, the pipes make it sound like an angry VW and the stance is a little more aggressive. “But it’s still a super reliable ‘road-sofa’.

Responsive image sliders

Last night, I started converting a site to a responsive layout, which went really well; at least until I stumbled on an absolute positioned image slider.

How do you determine the height of the slider, dynamically, if the sliding items are positioned absolute?

After several tries with a CSS based approach, I finally threw in the towel, deciding to take a JavaScript based approach instead. But not even that is as easy as one might think, since $('img').height(); doesn’t work in webkit browsers. You see, images are only “present”, when the entire page has finished loading, thus returning af value of 0.

A jQuery based solution would be to wrap the code in a $().load(); function, which would run after the page has finished loading, and then give us the correct value.

My solution was to then run a check on height, on a $(window).resize(); event, which would work just fine - just not as well as a pure CSS approach would.

At this point, my buddy Kim pointed me towards a solution based on the need for elastic embeds. This solution worked pretty well, since img elements are similar to object and embed in the DOM.

Doing something like this, strictly with CSS is always the best idea, but at least now we have two different approaches to the same problem.
